POPPLETON COMMUNITY ARCHIVE

The Archive was officially launched at the end of 1999 by Poppleton History Society (PHS), following a successful bid to the Millennium Festival Fund Awards for All Scheme. Development has built on invaluable work carried out locally by the PHS some years ago to record oral reminiscences.

In 2000 the project group of local residents has worked hard collecting and organising material from far and wide about the Poppletons, including items from Australia. The project has inspired older people to find out how computers can be used to capture images and memories of the villages. Using a multimedia system the group have catalogued the collection, at a base provided in Poppleton Library.

Contributors  The collection includes many of the photographs taken in Poppleton by William Hayes in the early 1900s. His Edwardian photographic studio in York was moved and re-erected at Beck Garth, Hutton le Hole, and is now one of the leading exhibits at the Ryedale Folk Museum there. We are most grateful to the Hayes Archive at the Museum for permission to reproduce these views.
The CD ROM also includes a large amount of material which Laurie Inman has collected over the past 40 years, and we are very grateful for his co-operation and work on the project. We would also like to thank the Evening Press for their support.
